Celes variabilis - Black Grasshopper (Pallas, 1771)
Description: Medium-sized, dark-coloured grasshopper (♂ 16-26 mm , ♀ 23-28 mm). The male is dark brown to black, the female greyish brown. The mid-keel of the pronotum has a transversal groove. The wings extend slightly beyond the hind knee. Most of the hind wing is red (rarely blue), but the tip is black. Similar species:Psophus stridulus and the Calliptamus species. Adults: from July to September Song: Males have no calling song. Habitat: Dry (alkaline) grasslands, rocky hillsides. Distribution: Rare in Hungary, known from different regions (e.g. Great Hungarian Plain, Bakony, Balaton Uplands). Note: Protected species in Hungary.
