Acrotylus insubricus - Common Digging Grasshopper (Scopoli, 1786)
Description: Medium-sized, slender species (♂ 12-18 mm, ♀ 17-24 mm). Body brownish-grey, head rising above the thorax. The wings are longer than the hind knee. Hind wing base red with a brown margin. Similar species: Acrotylus longipes, that species has yellow hind wings. Adults: It can be found all year round, but most abundant between May and October. Song: Males have no calling song. Habitat: Mostly in dry and warm habitats with a sandy soil, sometimes on hillsides with calcareous soil. Burrows in sand if temperatures are not suitable. The imago overwinters. Distribution: It can be found in many regions, but it's always scarce.
