Stenobothrus nigromaculatus - Black-spotted Toothed Grasshopper
(Herrich-Sch., 1840)
Description: Medium-sized, mostly green grasshopper (♂ 13-18 mm, ♀ 18-25 mm). The male's abdomen tip is orange or yellow, the antennae are light grey with the tip bending outwards. The fore wing is greyish brown, as wide as the femur in ♂, narrower in ♀ and not reaching the hind knee. The medial field on the fore wing is long, extending well beyond the half of the wing's length and has a characteristic ladder-pattern venation. The stigma is close to the wing tip. The hind tibiae are red, the labial palps are white.
Similar species: The other Stenobothrus species, especially S. lineatus.
Adults: from June to September
Song: The characteristic song consists of 2 to 6 high-pitched buzzing chirps lasting about 1-1,5 sec. long. The intervals between the chirps are 1 to 3 sec. long.

Distribution: Widespread but not common.
